Bodies of missing youths claimed as bodies of “terrorists” by the SLA

Ten of the 16 bodies that the Sri Lankan military displayed as that of “terrorists” killed by them were claimed by the families as their loved ones who went missing. The bodies bore marks of torture. The penises were curt off from some of the bodies. The faces of some of the bodies were burnt with acid to avoid identification.

On 29 August, Sri Lankan military claimed that it killed 16 “terrorists” at their Puvarasankulam Forward Defense Line (FDL) in Vavuniya. The military wanted to hand over the 16 bodies to the LTTE through ICRC and SLMM.

The LTTE denied loosing 16 members in Vavuniya and said that they have lost contact with seven members of their patrol team which was on patrol at the Puvarasankulam FDL of the LTTE.

Vavuniya Member of parliament, Sivanathan Kishore, on hearing the news, informed the people in his constituency to check the bodies to see if the body of their loved one is among the 16 bodies. Ten families identified the bodies of their loved one from the clothes they were wearing when they went missing.

The families had to wage a struggle to claim the bodies because SLA resisted handing the bodies over to the families. It was after Kishore and others emphasized to the SLA that they have not right to refuse to hand over the bodies to the families that the SLA relented.

Photos of the 16 bodies were sent to the LTTE Peace Secretariat through the SLMM. However, the bodies could not be identified because the faces were disfigured with acid. LTTE, however, has agreed to accept the remaining six bodies that were not claimed by families in Vavuniya in order to check if any of the bodies belonged to the missing seven LTTE members.

Why is it necessary to disfigure the faces with acid except to hide the identity of civilian youths so that they can be claimed as “terrorists”?
